How to Have Easy Wins in Your Kitchen Garden
6 Tips for Easy Wins in the Kitchen Garden This Year
Vegetable Gardening can feel overwhelming. Especially when you are first starting out. There is so much information out there and googling can send you down a never ending research rabbit hole.
Whether you are new to gardening, don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to the garden, or are just looking to keep it simple here are some ways to have easy wins in your kitchen garden this year.
Make a plan
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. A well planned garden is going to be more successful, less stressful, and less time consuming overall. Your plan includes your garden goals, the amount of time you have to tend to your garden, a plant list, planting schedule, and a list of materials you’ll need. Having these items figured out before the planting season will help set you up for a more successful season.
Start early
Many people think that the growing season in Columbus, Ohio begins in mid May. However, you can actually start planting as early as April 1st, and sometimes even sooner depending on the weather. Cool weather crops need cooler temperatures in order to thrive. Therefore, when you plant in early spring not only will you have harvests sooner, but you’ll also have more productive plants.
Start small
If you aren’t sure what your time restraints are yet, consider starting with a small salad and herb garden. While I don’t often recommend growing in individual pots and containers, read why here, a salad and herb garden can be done in a large container, patio planter, or even a large trough.
Keep in low maintenance
It can be tempting to grow all of the sexy veggies like squash, tomatoes, and cucumbers. But its important to keep in mind that these vegetables require more time and maintenance throughout the season. If you are short on time consider keeping it low maintenance and grow leafy greens, herbs, beans, and maybe a couple of root vegetables. Save the higher maintenance veggies for years when you have more time to spend in your kitchen garden.
Keep your soil healthy
Soil health is key to a productive vegetable garden. Healthy soil makes for strong healthy plants. Strong, healthy plants can better protect themselves from pests and diseases which will save you time in the garden. Add compost to your garden twice a season, rotate your crops, and consider adding organic soil amendments every few years.
