What to Plant in July in Columbus, Ohio

Believe it or not, there are still vegetables that can be planted in your kitchen garden in July here in Columbus, Ohio.

Personally, I make it a point to plant something in my garden every single month from April to October.

While July can be a tricky month to plant, it is definitely not impossible. In fact Seed and Vine installs kitchen gardens in July to be planted fully for fall vegetables.

For existing gardens, I recommend tucking in some additional warm season veggies.

Here are some warm season vegetables to plant in your garden this year:

Peppers

Pick pepper varieties that produce smaller fruits, they tend to mature more quickly. Start with plants in early July. You can test a few seeds if you are feeling adventurous.

Summer Squash and Zucchini

These veggies are quick growing and very prolific. Many varieties will start to produce in 60 days or less. Even by seed.

Cucumbers

Again, its important to pay attention to how long certain varieties take to mature. You’ll want to find varieties that will produce in 60 days or less.

Bush Beans

Bush beans are fun and easy to grow. They usually produce a large amount of beans per plant in 60 days or less. Harvest them young for the best flavor. Plant by seed in early July.

If you do not have an existing garden and you want to start one, July is actually the perfect time to get a garden in for fall.

Most fall crops will be planted in late July through mid August. Cool season vegetables like kale, carrots, peas, leafy greens, and broccoli will thrive in the fall. They are all frost tolerant and many are very cold hardy as well.

That means if you start your garden in July and plant for fall you can be enjoying fall harvests from your garden into December or even later!
